LovebetweenEnemiesexplorestheforbiddenrelationshipswhichformedbetweenforeignprisonersofwarandGermanwomenduringtheSecondWorldWar.Fromthedesiretohavefuntodeeplovecommitments,thisstudyexaminestherangeofmotivationswhichlaybehindtheserelationships,tappingintonewdocumentsanddrawingonthousandsofcourtcasestoofferatransnationalanalysisofpersonalrelationsbetweenenemies.Highlightinggenderroles,thecontradictoryreactionsofthecommunitiessurroundingthecouples,andthediplomatictensionsresultingfromtheseverepunishments,thisisahistoryofeverydaylifewhichthrowslightonthissubversiveaspectofintimacyinwartimeNaziGermany.Comparingthe’transgressing’couplestoothergroupspersecutedfortheirculturalorprivatechoices,Scheckdemonstrateshowtherelationshipsweresilencedorjustifiedinthepost-warmemoryofprisoners,whiletheGermanwomen,whohadbeenpubliclyshamed,continuedtolivewiththestigma,andevenillegitimatechildren,fortheyearsthatfollowed.
